Average monthly electric bill by state
Over the 12 months to August 2026, the average US home spent $158 a month on electricity and used 875 kWh. A bill depends on both the price and how much power a home uses, so a cheap-rate state with high use can have a larger bill than an expensive one.

If your bill is hard to pay
The federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps with heating and cooling bills. Find your state office on the LIHEAP page. Your state utility commission handles complaints about utility billing and rates.
